Support for Ukraine
Policy Motion agreed at Spring Conference 2023
Conference notes:
A. Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, assisted by Belarus, is being resisted strongly by the Ukrainian people.
B. Overwhelming international support for a sovereign Ukraine, condemnation of Russia and imposition of sanctions.
C. Over 8 million Ukrainians are living as refugees across Europe with over 150,000 living in the UK and 3,000 in Wales.
Conference believes:
i. Putin’s actions challenge Ukraine’s sovereignty, the rules-based international order and threaten Europe’s security.
ii. EU and NATO membership is open to any sovereign state that meets its values and fulfils its membership criteria.
iii. Sovereign states should be free to choose their own alliances and security arrangements.
iv. The UK government and NATO allies should give Ukraine all the weapons they need to liberate their country.
v. refugees are likely to be living in Wales for the next few years and need to be supported to settle in our communities.
Conference calls on the UK government to
1. Enable refugees from Ukraine to enter the UK without having to apply for a visa.
2. Seize the assets of shell companies owning UK property which are unable to name a credible beneficial owner.
3. Sanction Putin’s associates, including seizing assets immediately, and use the money to help the rebuilding of Ukraine.
Conference calls on the Welsh Government to:
I. Accelerate the process for housing refugees in permanent accommodation.
II. Support schools to educate refugee children with limited English.
III. Provide training and support for refugees to help them find work in Wales.
