Job Description

Role: Communications & Social Media Officer

Hours: 22.5 hours per week (we would draw attention to a similar role to be recruited in the office of Jane Dodds MS, our Party Leader, for 2 days/week. It is anticipated that both roles could be performed by a single individual).

Responsible to: Chief Executive

Salary: £27,000+ depending on experience (pro-rata)

Location: Cardiff Bay

Purpose of the job: To ensure that the Welsh Liberal Democrat message is communicated effectively to voters by creating positive coverage, with a particular focus on social media.

Closing date: Friday, 14th March

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Promote the Welsh Liberal Democrat message across all channels including traditional, social, and new media.
  2. Take ownership of the Welsh Liberal Democrats’ social media channels, developing content (including videos and graphics) to increase followers and engagement.
  3. Develop a social media plan to ensure that appropriate content is produced for each distinctive platform, bearing in mind both the audience and the format.  
  4. Be responsible for a social media advertising budget and ensure that this is used effectively with a high return on investment.
  5. Ensure a complete acquisition journey, so that voters who sign petitions and sign-up for newsletters receive appropriate email communications.
  6. Develop resources (templates/statistics/images etc) that empower local parties, candidates and spokespeople to generate positive coverage in both print and social media.  
  7. Build a strong working relationship with the LDHQ digital and media teams, ensuring that federal personnel are appropriately briefed on Welsh issues and identifying opportunities to deliver a Welsh angle on UK-wide campaigns.
  8. Support the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats and their teams to maximise positive media opportunities and coverage for the Liberal Democrats.
  9. Take a lead role in organising media coverage for campaign visits, party conferences, and other Welsh Liberal Democrat events.  
  10. Proactively assess the Welsh media/political environment to take advantage of new or emerging opportunities.
  11. Respond to inbound press enquiries and media bids, liaising with the offices of the Leader and Deputy Leader (or other spokespeople) as necessary.  
  12. Any other tasks as required by the Chief Executive or Party President.  

Person Specification:

  1. Good knowledge and understanding of the Welsh political environment.
  2. Able to craft effective political messaging for general and target audiences.
  3. Excellent written communication skills.
  4. Capable of building strong working relationships with internal stakeholders.
  5. Proactive and able to take a lead on projects without direct supervision.
  6. Up-to-date understanding of and engagement with social media.
  7. Excellent organisational skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  8. Able to work flexibly and respond to breaking news stories at evenings or weekends as required.
